Frequently asked questions

Everything worth knowing about the Czech vignette — before you set off.

Basics

What is a vignette and when do I need one?

The vignette is the charge for using motorways and expressways in the Czech Republic. It is mandatory for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes the moment you enter a tolled road. Without a valid vignette you risk a fine — cameras on toll gantries scan licence plates automatically.

Is the vignette a sticker for the windscreen?

No. For several years the Czech vignette has been fully electronic (e-vignette). You stick nothing on the glass. The system ties the charge to the licence plate and checks it automatically by camera.

For what period can I buy the vignette?

You can choose: 1 day, 10 days, 30 days or a full year. Pick what suits your trip — for a weekend in Prague the 1-day or 10-day vignette is enough; for frequent driving the annual vignette pays off.

Can I set the vignette start date in the future?

Yes. At purchase you choose the date validity begins — today or weeks/months ahead. Handy when you plan a trip in advance.

Purchase and payment

How do I buy the vignette step by step?

You choose the period, enter the licence plate, country of registration, start date and email, and pay. The whole thing takes about two minutes. No account needed. You receive the confirmation by email.

Which payment methods do you accept?

Card (Visa, Mastercard), Apple Pay and Google Pay. Payments are handled by Stripe — the same provider large online shops use.

In which currency do I pay?

SFDI sets its rates in Czech crowns (CZK); we show an indicative amount in euro. The final amount is shown at payment.

Is your price the same as in the official system?

Our price can be higher than the official system, because we are an intermediary service — the price includes the road toll payable to SFDI and order handling (processing your order, English-language support). You can always buy the vignette directly at edalnice.gov.cz.

How quickly does the vignette become active?

After payment we register the vignette in the official system — you receive the confirmation with the vignette details by email, usually within 2–3 minutes of payment. With a future start date the vignette is valid from that date; if it is more than 30 days away, we register it automatically about 30 days before the start and send the confirmation then.

Czech Republic

Do I get a discount for CNG or a hybrid?

Yes. Low-emission vehicles pay less: natural gas (CNG/LNG) and biomethane pay about half the standard rate, and plug-in hybrids emitting up to 50 g/km CO₂ pay even less. You pick the fuel type in the form — the price updates automatically. Note: LPG does not qualify for the discount (standard rate applies); fully electric and hydrogen vehicles are exempt after registering in the SFDI system.

What does the Czech vignette cost?

The cheapest is the 1-day vignette (from 375 CZK, about 15 €). Also available: 10 days, 30 days and a year. You will find the exact prices on the Czech vignette page and in the pricing.

Which Czech roads require a vignette?

The vignette applies on motorways (marked with the letter D, e.g. D1 Prague–Brno) and part of the expressways. Country and city roads are free. Most transit routes through the Czech Republic run on tolled motorways.

How high is the fine for driving without a vignette in the Czech Republic?

The fine can reach up to 20,000 CZK (about 810 €). Checks are automatic via cameras that scan plates. Notices can be delivered by post across the EU.

Does the Czech vignette also apply in other countries?

No. The Czech vignette applies only on Czech motorways and expressways. For other countries you need a separate vignette — Slovak at e-znamka.org, Hungarian at e-matrica.org, Slovenian at e-vinjeta.org, Romanian at e-rovinieta.org, Bulgarian at bg-vineta.org. Austria has its own system (asfinag.at).

Vehicles and exemptions

Does a motorcycle need a vignette in the Czech Republic?

No. In the Czech Republic motorcycles are exempt from the charge — no vignette needed. This applies only to motorcycles; every vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes needs a vignette.

And a trailer?

In the Czech Republic the trailer is exempt from the vignette. If you tow a trailer with a vehicle up to 3.5 t, the vehicle’s vignette is enough — you do not buy a separate one for the trailer.

Which vehicles are supported?

Cars and vans up to 3.5 tonnes gross weight — cars, SUVs, vans, motorhomes up to that weight. We do not support heavier vehicles (lorries are billed via a different system — mýto).

I have a motorhome — what applies for the vignette?

A motorhome up to 3.5 t is treated like a car — the normal vignette is enough. Different rules apply to heavier motorhomes — write to us and we will advise you.

After purchase

What should I do if I entered the wrong licence plate?

Write to us as soon as possible at info@e-dalnice.org with the order number and the correct plate. As long as the vignette’s validity has not yet started, we will try to correct the data. After the start of validity a change is not possible — so check the data before paying.

Can I get a refund?

If the vignette is registered within 14 days of purchase, you request immediate performance of the service at checkout and lose the right of withdrawal once the vignette is registered. If it is to be registered later than 14 days after purchase (start date far in the future), you can cancel the order with a full refund until it is registered. If the order has not yet been fulfilled, write to us — we will check the options.

I did not receive a confirmation email — what should I do?

Check your spam and promotions folders. If the email is still missing after a few minutes, write to info@e-dalnice.org with the plate and the email used at purchase — we will check the order status.

Are you a government website?

No. We are an independent, commercial intermediary service. We are not connected to any authority or toll operator. The official system is edalnice.gov.cz — you can also buy the vignette there yourself.

Routes and transit

I am driving on holiday to Croatia — do I need a Czech vignette?

It depends on the route. If you drive through the Czech Republic (e.g. from Saxony via Prague), then yes — you need a Czech vignette. But many routes from southern Germany to Croatia go via Austria — then the Czech vignette is not needed.

From Dresden to Prague — which vignette to buy?

The Dresden–Prague route runs on the A17 and the Czech D8. You need a Czech vignette. For a short trip the 10-day vignette is enough. The 1-day vignette is valid only for the chosen calendar day (until 23:59) — not 24 hours from purchase; for a return trip on different days you therefore need two 1-day vignettes or the 10-day vignette.

I am transiting through the Czech Republic further south — what about the vignette?

On Czech motorways you need a Czech vignette, whatever the route. Note that the further countries on the way (Slovakia, Austria, Hungary) have their own vignettes — buy those before entry in their official systems.

I am only driving a short motorway stretch — do I need a vignette?

Yes. The vignette applies across the whole tolled network, whether you drive one kilometre or 300 km. Even a short motorway drive without a vignette risks a fine. The cheapest 1-day vignette is usually far cheaper than a fine.

Does the Czech vignette apply in Austria or Slovakia?

No. Each country has its own vignette. The Czech one applies only in the Czech Republic. For Slovakia, Austria or Hungary you need that country’s own vignette — we do not register them on this site. You can order the Slovak and Hungarian vignettes on our sister sites e-znamka.org and e-matrica.org, and the Austrian one in the official system asfinag.at.

Where is it best to buy the vignette before departure?

Online, in advance — before you set off. That way you have the vignette ready before you reach the border and do not hunt for a petrol station or sales point on the way. You can set the start date to your departure day.

Company cars, leasing, rentals

My car is leased — can I buy a vignette?

Yes. The vignette is tied to the licence plate, not the owner. Whether the car is yours, leased or financed makes no difference — you enter the plate, done.

I drive a company car — whom is the vignette registered to?

The vignette is linked to the vehicle’s licence plate, not the driver or the company. You enter the company car’s plate and it works just like a private vehicle.

I have a rental car — who buys the vignette?

Check the rental contract — some rental firms charge for the vignette, some do not. If not, buy it yourself and enter the rental car’s plate. The vignette applies regardless of who owns the vehicle.

I changed my licence plate — what happens to the vignette?

The vignette is linked to a specific plate. After a plate change the old vignette no longer applies to the new plate. If you are only planning this, buy the vignette for the current plate or wait for the new one.

I am selling a car with a valid vignette — does it pass to the buyer?

The vignette stays tied to the plate. If the new owner keeps the same plate, the vignette remains valid. With a plate change it lapses for the old plate.

Practical situations

I bought the vignette at night — does it work straight away?

Yes. Orders are processed automatically around the clock. After payment we register the vignette in the official system, regardless of the time — the confirmation comes by email, usually within 2–3 minutes of payment.

How do I check whether my vignette is active?

After purchase you receive an email with the confirmation and vignette details (plate, period). You can also check the status in the official system edalnice.gov.cz by the plate.

Do I get an invoice for the vignette?

You receive an electronic registration confirmation by email with the amount and order details — it serves as proof.

Is the vignette checked at the border?

There are no longer fixed border checks within the Schengen area. The vignette is checked by cameras on toll gantries along the motorways — they scan plates automatically, around the clock.

What if the vignette expires during the trip?

Once the vignette expires, continuing on tolled roads risks a fine. If you drive back after a longer stay, buy a new vignette with a start date on the return day — you can do it online from anywhere.

Is the annual vignette valid for exactly 365 days?

In the Czech Republic the annual vignette is valid for 365 days from the chosen start date. At purchase you always see the validity period.
