Czech vignette fine 2026 — how much driving without one costs
Driving on a Czech motorway without a valid vignette is an offence, and the penalty is far higher than the charge you saved. Czech enforcement is automatic, around the clock, and works just as well on foreign plates as on local ones. Here is how much it costs, how the checks operate, and how a fine can reach you at home months later.
How much is the fine
The penalty has two levels. Paid on the spot during a check, it is up to 5,000 CZK (about 200 €). If the case is passed into administrative proceedings, it rises to up to 20,000 CZK (about 800 €).
| Type | Amount | When |
|---|---|---|
| On-the-spot fine | up to 5,000 CZK (~200 €) | during a check |
| Administrative penalty | up to 20,000 CZK (~800 €) | after you leave, by post |
How the checks work
The Czech Republic runs an automatic enforcement system (Argos). Gantries above the motorways carry cameras that read the plate of every passing vehicle and match it in real time against the central database of valid vignettes. There is no barrier and no stopping — if your vignette is valid, you simply drive on. Unmarked vehicles with mobile scanners patrol the same way.
This means there is nowhere to "slip through". The system does not rely on a patrol happening to be present; it reads plates continuously, day and night, including the first kilometre after the border.
How a fine reaches you abroad
A foreign plate offers no protection. Under EU cross-border enforcement (CBE), data about offences is exchanged between member states, so the payment request can be delivered to your home address by post — sometimes weeks or months after you returned from your trip. The Czech authorities can pursue a claim for several years.
The penalty can normally be paid online, so you do not have to travel back to the Czech Republic to settle it. But the simplest course is not to be fined in the first place.
The maths
If you are still deciding which period to buy, our guide on 1 day or 10 days walks through the common cases. And if you want to be sure the vignette is registered before you set off, read when to buy the vignette.
Conclusion
The fine for driving without a Czech vignette is automatic, hard to avoid and many times the cost of the vignette itself. Buy in advance, enter the plate correctly, and set the right start date. You can do it in about two minutes on the Czech vignette page.
