When to buy the Czech vignette — timing, registration and start date
The Czech vignette is digital, so timing matters in a way a sticker never did. You choose the start date, registration takes a little time, and buying at the last minute before a gantry is a small but avoidable risk. Here is how to time it.
Choosing the start date
At purchase you set the date on which validity begins. It can be today or any date in the future — even months ahead. This is the key advantage of buying online in advance: you can sort it out calmly from home and simply set the date to the day you plan to enter a Czech motorway.
How long registration takes
The purchase itself takes about two minutes. The short gap until registration is complete is why we recommend buying a little ahead of your departure rather than at the border.
Buying in advance
Because you choose the start date, there is no downside to buying early. A vignette bought in March with a July start date simply waits until July. This removes the classic stress of arriving at the border and scrambling for a vignette on your phone in a queue.
The annual vignette and the start date
The Czech annual vignette runs for 365 days from the start date you choose — not until the end of the calendar year. Buy with a start date of 15 March 2026 and it is valid until 14 March 2027. That is different from some countries where the annual vignette expires on a fixed calendar date.
At the border vs online
You can buy at petrol stations near the border (OMV, MOL, Shell, Benzina), but it usually means queues in summer and no free choice of start date. Buying online in advance is faster and lets you set the exact date you need.
The 1-day trap
If you buy the one-day vignette, remember it expires at 23:59 on the chosen day — not 24 hours from purchase. If you arrive in the evening, a one-day vignette may cover only a few hours. In that case the ten-day vignette (499 CZK) is often the smarter buy. We compare the two in 1 day or 10 days.
Conclusion
Buy a little ahead of your trip, set the start date to your motorway day, and allow 2–3 minutes for registration. That removes all the timing risk. Start on the Czech vignette page, and see the full prices in the complete guide.
